Llantrissant - (clan tresh shunt, approximate
Welsh pronunciation) or (lan tri sant, American
pronunciation). A Welsh placename, home of the Royal Mint,
north of Swansea.
Etymologically, Llantrissant is a word composed
of "llan" which means a yard, churchyard or clan and
"trissant" is derived from an ancient Welsh word, tristre,
which has various meanings: a place of ambush, a secret
meeting place in trust from which the English word, tryst was
derived. So, therefore, a loose interpretation could give it
the meaning of "a yard where lovers meet." However, the
historians of Llantrissant, the city, provide the
interpretation that it means the Church of Three
Saints. |
